The Structure of Government Schools in India

Ever wondered how the structure of India’s school system differs from that of the US or Italy?

For example, what happens when students graduate after 10th grade?

Many students opt for a 3-year Polytechnic course of study after grade 10. The majority of CF students opt for Polytechnic with the benefit that 3 years of Polytechnic Study are equivalent to one year of a University Engineering course. Upon completion, a Baccalaureate is achieved, with only 3 more years of study.

Indian Government Schools – the equivalent to a Public School in the USA – are divided into stages:

Primary School (Grades 1-5) – Students ages 6-11. Basic reading, writing and math skills are taught.

Upper Primary / Middle Schools (Grades 6-8) – General science, social studies and math streams are added.

Secondary School (Grades 9-10) – Students prepare for board exams, with testing across core subjects. A healthy lunch and school uniforms are provided by the government for all students.

Higher Secondary School (Grades 11-12) – Students may select a specific stream to study, such as science, commerce, arts/humanities.

Higher Secondary, also called Intermediate or Junior College (Grades 11-12) – These are not located on the same campus as the Secondary Schools. This is a different approach compared to the USA (where students complete Grades 9-12) or Italy (where students complete Grades 9-13)  before high school graduation.

In India, students attend Grades 1-10 without cost. Intermediate or Junior Colleges (Higher Secondary), run by the local government are free, but acceptance is based on eligibility criteria. For eligible students there are provisions for mid-day meals and special exam prep. There are many private junior colleges which require tuition fees.

Note that Government Pre-Schools are free, but are run by a different branch of education. Pre-Schools are for children 3-5 years old. Nutritional food for lactating mothers and medical checks for children are provided for free. The Government Education Office has recently advised that the youngest children (ages 3 and 4) will have their own dedicated programs and 5-year-olds will be assigned to a kindergarten grade level. It is great to see increased support for the youngest school age children!
